Clerk of the Courts - Susan Kirk
Assignment for Evansville Living Magazine-Aug. 2005
On
my way to shoot an assignment, I stopped for gas and found a
guy selling melons and whittling away on some wood and tree
roots.
I stopped, bought a melon, and made some pictures.
Jerry Lee Duncan Sr. makes walking sticks.
Not just any walking sticks, but sticks with character!
It can take him a year of carving to finish
one walking stick, but he takes his time and does
what he does, as he says "Just because I love doing it".
He has carved most of his life, and makes beautiful plaques,
walking sticks, and other things from the wood he finds just
laying around,
or that he recieves from friends.
He is a perfect example of an artist honing his craft simply
for the love and joy of creating something beautiful.
A former steeplejack, Jerry Lee began carving his walking sticks
after a back injury when he tired of only seeing the typical
canes, and
wanted something with more character.
One look at his creations tell you he succeeded, as the mighty,
and much feared, Black Mamba winds it's way to the handle.
Or the Egyptian Cobra that adorns the piece of wood given to
him by Larry Bird.
Most of all, Jerry Lee is content sitting on the side of the
road on a very hot summers' day,
selling some Posey County melons and carving his walking sticks......just
because he loves doing it!
It was great meeting Jerry Lee Duncan, and it is occasions like
these that make me glad that I also
do what I do, because I love doing it!
