Evansville Music Scene

Welcome to the page for Evansville Music featuring area bands and musicians.

We have a wide variety of talented musicians here in Evansville. Drop by your favorite watering hole and show them some love and support!

I'll be happy to photograph your band if you contact me, and if I can work a date into my schedule. My hope is to make this page a complete and comprehensive resource of all styles of local music. I hope you enjoy the info, photos and video found here.

Email me, or sign the guestbook with info on your band and I'll get to a gig and add photos of the band to the website.

Videos from Sunday, May 8, 2011 at The Deerhead. For some reason so far I've only been able to actually embed one of the videos directly into my web site, so for now, the others are listed as links to the video on my You Tube page. As soon as I figure out what I need to do differently I will change that situation, but for now I just want folks to be able to watch these incredibly talented blues players! Note: Although I use great quality still cameras, I just have one little pocket digital camera that happens to shoot video....non HD....so please excuse the less than professional audio and video quality but please DO watch the playing on these videos! If you are a fan of guitar playing and especially if you are a fan of The Blues, I think you will find yourself wanting to see much more of these "Blues Co-Op" situations at a couple of our most popular watering holes....The Deerhead on Sunday nights at 9pm, and the Bikers & Blues nights at Lamasco Bar & Grill on Tuesday nights begining at 7pm! If you are a Blues fan at all, you will want to check these nights out! They are getting VERY cool and popular! Plus you never know who might show up and play!

First video below - "One Way Out" - Check out the dual slide playing at the 3:10 mark!
"Mannish Boy"
"Black Cat Bone"/"Standing on Shakey Ground"
"The Sun is Shining"
"Crossroads"/"Sweet Home Chicago"
"Rock Me Baby" (with Melissa/vocal)
"Statesboro Blues"

The Amazing Soul Crackers featuring Tommy Stillwell with special guests, Boscoe France and Paul Blake at The Deerhead Sidewalk Cafe on April 17, 2011

On April 17, 2011 Tommy Stillwell (L) and Boscoe France(R) played together for the first time in almost 20 years! It was a great day for our music community and particularly for all area Blues lovers! I was proud to have been a small part of it and thrilled to watch and listen to these incredible guitar players! I hope those who view this page enjoy the photos and videos. Come out to The Deerhead and Lamasco and enjoy some unforgettable nights of blues music!

These are images of the two finest blues guitar players I've ever heard, and whom I am proud and honored to consider friends and "brothers". Yet another young an amazing talent was there as well. Paul Blake a.k.a. "O.G. Saltine" got up and played a couple of tunes with Tommy for the first time "on stage"! .....Now we just need to get all 3 of them on stage at the same time!

Another member of the brand new River Basin Blues Society, and I believe, a part of the "Blues Co-op" is Michael "Blind Dog" Gatewood, so watch for and support his shows and he will be playing soon with The Amazing Soul Crackers.....so he is liable to show up and sit in as well!

                                John Lutrell a.k.a. Johnny Fulltime

What can I say? John is the local blues musicians' best friend and biggest supporter!
Through his work as the D.J. for the WUEV 91.5 radio show: "A Case of The Blues" from 12-6pm on Saturdays, John is devoted to promoting and supporting the Blues musicians around the Tri State area and beyond, and was the brainchild behind the brand new "River Basin Blues Society" (find it on Facebook). In his spare time, John also runs his web radio show which you can find at www.fulltimeblues.com

Thanks for all that you do for "The Blues", John!

I also have to give a nod to my great friend, Rod Austin. Rod is a talented carpenter/woodworker and guitar builder but more than that he is my friend and a HUGE music lover who has helped turn me on to some great music! Thanks Rod!

I also want to give a shout out to a new blues band in our area: "The El Mocambo Trio" - featuring Casey James on guitar, Allen Van Hoosier on drums, and John Gillespie on bass. The trio does an excellent job in the form of a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughn.

They have gigs coming up Friday, May 13th at The Patio Bar & Grill in Henderson; May 27th at Darrens Pub in Henderson; June 24th at Club Royale; June 29th at The Deerhead and July 4, 5 and 6th at Hoosiers Lounge, so you’ll have plenty of chances to check them out!

Sat. Jan. 23, 2010- The Main Gate

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I Love my job!

Over the years, the one thing which has always had the most profound effect on me have been those  serendipitous moments when one simply stumbles into an unexpected moment of musical harmony and talent which just seems to come "out of the blue", and was not exactly what you expected when you set out for the evening.

One such recent moment came on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

My assignment for the evening was to make some photographs of the Family Reunion concert by the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra at The Victory Theatre in Evansville.

After finishing my work, I decided to top off my day by making the half block stroll to the new establishment, The Main Gate, on the Walkway, to have a drink and listen to my friend, and a guy I consider to be THE nicest guy in the local music scene, and for that matter, probably the nicest guy I know, Carl Rodenberg tickle the ivories for a while.

Just to hear Carl play anytime, anywhere, alone, is always a treat for me. No matter what the day has been like, I can sit back, savor a drink, and get lost in the beautiful melodies and Carl's soulful voice and leave the day's troubles by the wayside.

This much I knew going in. What I hadn't expected came next.

Two of Carl's friends showed up to join him. First, Sax man extraordinaire, Roy Carter strolled in to add his amazing Sax chops to the mix. Then, after just finishing her performance with the Philharmonic Orchestra, and I know the following words are often uttered just to be "nice", but in her case, it's simply true; the lovely and talented Diane Fowler dropped in with her Cello and joined Carl and Roy in a couple of tunes to end the evening.

It was an honor and a privilege to have been one of those present and to have been treated to such an awesome display of musical talent!

Those who know me are aware that there are things much more important to me than money or the typical things that tend to drive people. The chance to listen to good music and do what I can through my writing and photography to help promote them is one of those things. The opportunity to make a new friend in the course of doing my job, and/or checking out and photographing local musicians is another.

I made a couple of new friends Saturday night in Roy and Diane. It was to be sure, a night of serendipity, an evening to be remembered, and new bonds of friendship formed. Does it get any better than that?

On a side note, Carl, Diane and myself topped off an awesome night with a late night hunt, through the streets and alleys of downtown, in a sudden mini hurricane-like gust of wind and some torrential rain, looking for a lost cell phone by repeatedly calling it with my phone. I guess it was one of those "You had to be there" things, but in some strange way it made a perfect end to one amazine night!

I hope these three people will play together more often, and if you ever have a chance to check them out anywhere, please do so. You'll be glad you did!

Check out the video below. I was shooting still photos during their performance of "Desperado", but managed to capture one tune on video.

Thanks guys!
